Eating with Ceramic Braces
Protect your smile by choosing foods that keep your braces clean and intact
Ceramic braces, or tooth-colored braces, look like metal braces, except they blend in with the teeth. Therefore, they are not as noticeable as metal braces. However, you might draw attention to your braces if you are not careful about what you eat. Make sure you refrain from eating stain-causing foods, as the stains can leave their marks on the braces and elastic bands.
What Foods Are Forbidden?
When you wear ceramic braces, you need to avoid stain-causing foods, such as:
- Tomatoes
- Dark chocolate
- Colas
- Teas and coffee
- Red wine
In addition, avoid foods that are too crunchy, hard, or sticky, as they can dislodge the brackets on your braces. Examples include:
- Hard breads
- Ice
- Sticky candies
- Chewing on pens or other non-edibles
The idea is to find nutritious foods that will not damage your braces or trigger the formation of cavities.
What Foods Can I Eat?
Softer foods will make it easier to stay on track orthodontically. Consider including the following in your diet:
- Soft fruits: cantaloupe, grapefruit, nectarines, peaches, kiwi, tangerines
- Steamed vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, carrots
- Dairy: yogurt, milk, cheese
- Proteins: baked chicken, meatloaf, seafood, lunchmeat
- Desserts: smoothies, applesauce
- Grains: cooked rice, pasta, soft breads (muffins, pancakes, biscuits)
- Eggs: scrambled, poached, or boiled
