How to Handle Braces Problems
Soreness or Irritation
Mild soreness is common after getting or adjusting braces. This is not an emergency. Over-the-counter pain relievers and a soft food diet (like soup, pasta, and yogurt) can help ease discomfort.
Loose or Broken Brackets
Avoid sticky or hard foods that might worsen the issue. If a bracket comes off or feels loose, call us. In the meantime, avoid chewing on that side and refrain from playing sports without a mouthguard.
Poking or Loose Wires
If a wire pokes your cheek or gum, try using the eraser end of a pencil or a Q-tip to gently push it into a more comfortable position. Orthodontic wax can help soothe the area until we can fix it.
Missing Ligature Band
If a small band around a bracket falls off, you may be able to reposition it using tweezers. Can’t find it? Don’t worry—just call our office to schedule a quick repair.

What counts as a braces emergency?

What should I do if a bracket comes off?

A wire is poking my cheek—what can I do?
