Not only are teeth a major factor in the appearance of your smile, but they also serve numerous functional tasks like eating and speaking as well. When your teeth are crooked, all of these functions are affected. Your smile suffers, and your confidence may not be what it could. Your risks for tooth decay and gum disease increase. Your chewing may be affected, which can impact your nutrition. You may be faced with issues like bruxism and TMJ disorder.Despite these risks, many people have avoided orthodontic treatment because they do not want to deal with traditional metal braces.

Traditional Treatment for Correcting Tooth Alignment

Metal braces have been used for decades to correct poorly aligned teeth and jaws. They use brackets and wires to move your teeth into the proper positions. While braces are effective, they are not always the favored option. Metal braces have several downsides. One of the biggest disadvantages is that they are very visible. Anytime you open your mouth to speak or smile, the metal can be seen. This can make people, particularly older teens and adults, feel self-conscious. Metal braces can be difficult to keep clean, which can lead an increased risk for cavities and gum disease as well as decalcification, or tiny white scars that can mar the beauty of your teeth. Brackets and wires can also cause discomfort. The brackets and wires that break can irritate your intraoral tissues, causing painful sores.

Invisalign for Straight Teeth

For a long time, braces were the only option available for treating crooked teeth. Today, however, you have options. One of these options is Invisalign. Instead of brackets and wires, Invisalign uses removable clear plastic aligners. While removable, the aligners should only be removed to eat and to brush your teeth. They should be left in for 20 to 22 hours each day. Your aligners are made from digital impressions of your mouth. The impressions are displayed on a computer monitor, and specialized software is used to custom create aligners just for you. The technology allows us to see every step of your treatment from beginning to end.

How Invisalign Works

During your treatment with Invisalign, you go through several sets of aligners. Typically, most patients will use between 18 to 30 different sets depending upon the situation. Each set of aligners is made to be worn for two weeks at a time, and every new set is slightly different from the previous one. The aligners work to gradually move your teeth into proper alignment. Once your treatment is complete, you will be provided with a retainer to help maintain your results.
